Hello, peeps!
Finals are (almost) over, Summer's approaching and so a lot of free time is ahead. If you are like me and spend part of your lazy sunny days watching shows, you might be interested in this post because I'm going to talk through some of my favorites/worth-watching. There are too many of them so I might be posting a second part. Anyway, you can start by the following:
1. Mr Robot. Listen, if you haven't seen it yet, you are missing out. There are so many good things about this tv show they are already calling it a "modern classic", and I'm telling you: they are not wrong. It has everything: a brilliant diverse cast, breathtaking cinematography (very Fincher-ish), a great soundtrack and an addictive and well developed plot that will blow your mind.
The main character of the story is Elliot Alderson (Cinnamon Roll™), a skilled hacker who suffers from social anxiety, depression and paranoia and he's played by the super mega talented Rami Malek. His performance is OUTSTANDING. The way he conveys so many feelings with his eyes while we are hearing Elliot's internal dialogue is breathtaking. I hadn't been this touched by a performance in a while. Seriously, I reckon this man is going places. He's splendid and deserves all the recognition he's receiving.
Ok, going back to the plot: this Elliot Alderson is "recruited" by Mr. Robot, who plans to end with one of the biggest conglomerates in the world in order to set people free from their economic debts. How are they trying to do this? By hacking into their system and deleting their clients data. It basically portrays two opposite worlds: that of the average people struggling in this capitalist system and its opposite, those who rule it. Sounds pretty relevant right now? Doesn't it?
Another thing I love is the fact that women are not idealised nor act as mere romantic interests of the male characters. They are independent, intelligent, strong, impulsive, naïve... they are human. And they struggle every day against a patriarchal society that considers them not to be enough.
As I said, there's also diversity in terms of gender, sexuality and ethnicity, which is something we are not that accustomed to see in the mass media.
Overall it's a really good show, entertaining and with a really superior quality in terms of production.
It starts like any crime show: the dead body of a beautiful teenage girl is found in a small town in the middle of nowehere and an FBI agent, named Agent Cooper (another Cinnamon Roll), comes to the rescue. However, Cooper is not an average FBI agent and this town is not as boring as it seems. There might be some supernatural stuff going on as well. But I don't want to spoil it to you so you'll just have to check it out. I promise it's a very peculiar show with funny and original characters and a very dark vibe that will leave you craving for more. Oh, and its third season airs next year after a very long break (more than 20 years). Can it be a better moment to introduce yourself into the world of Twin Peaks? I don't think so. Go ahead. You're welcome.
3. Scream. Do you remember those movies from the nineties where a serial killer went around murdering teenagers? Well, they've made a show based on that plot and I admit it is better than what I had expected. There's something about it that makes you want to binge-watch it until you catch up. Seriously, it's tremendously addictive. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you can't handle seeing blood and mutilations because there's plenty of that. If you are not bothered by that, I suggest you start right now so you can follow the new season, which has started last week. Oh, and it's on Netflix.
We also have Donna, Harvey's sassy secretary, whom I wish I could befriend; Louis, who will get you in your nerves and Jessica, this powerful, inteligent, tall woman who could scare any man with just one look. I just want to be like her when I grow up.
PS: drinking game, drink every time someone says the word 'bullshit'.
Well, this is it for today but if you decide to watch half of this list you should be provided with entertaintment for a few couple of weeks. Please, take some breaks in the middle of your binge-watching session and stay hydrated. Do you have any recommendations for me? I love wasting my time with fictional characters.
